Primary Division

2014-2015 SCHEDULE | TUITION | REGISTER TODAY | ACADEMIC HANDBOOK

When your son or daughter studies ballet at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet they receive more than outstanding dance instruction. They learn skills and develop essential traits that will last a lifetime. Accomplished faculty, equipped with a proven curriculum, will teach your child. If you’re going to introduce your little one to ballet, start with the best!

The Primary Division introduces and builds upon beginning levels of ballet technique. This division consists of levels 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B. Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet offers preschool and beginning level classes in Carlisle at CPYB Warehouse Studios and CPYB Barn Studios, and at the Grace Milliman Pollock Performing Arts Center in Camp Hill.

Dress Code

Students of all ages begin in Level 1A, learning the basic ballet positions, the progression of a standard ballet barre, and learning the French vocabulary that defines all ballet steps. The student moves into beginning centre work, away from the support of the ballet barre.

When the student learns the ballet technique appropriate for each level and when the student's body has become strong enough to accomplish the movements taught, then at the discretion of the Artistic Director, the student moves to the next level where more intricate steps and combinations are introduced. Advancement is based on ability, not age.

Performance experience is an integral part of a dancer's training at CPYB. Performance opportunities may be offered to students in Primary and Pre-Professional divisions. In order to qualify as a member of the CPYB performing company, students must comply with requirements as described in the Academic Handbook and Student Policies.

Beyond training in the studio and on stage, CPYB offers CPYB Dialogues, an informative seminar series on important topics such as nutrition and wellness, injury prevention, resume preparation, and more.

It is recommended that students invest at minimum the following amount of time into their ballet studies per week:

  • Level 1A - 2 hours
  • Level 1B - 4 hours
  • Level 2A - 8 hours
  • Level 2B - 10 hours
